Property Description
New HVAC on 2nd & 3rd floors 8/19. This post-Civil War house was built circa 1875 as side-hall double parlor plan with Georgian details added in the early 1900s. The original house was destroyed by the massive fire of 1861. This Victorian era house features elements characteristic of the time period including the decorative plaster cornice, swag, crown molding and ceiling medallions. The details of the plaster treatment emphasize the grandiosity of the main public rooms-the double parlors, library and foyer-on the first floor. There are ornamental half-columns & decorative lattice marking the division between the two first-floor parlors. .. Built 1875, Queen Anne Style. OrThe coal inserts in the fireplaces are likely original to the house, as are the mantles. The first-floor stair hall includes a screen that reflects the decorative woodwork of the parlors, disguising the stairs to the upper levels of the house. Another characteristic of the Victorian vernacular is the use of lead in the window panes of the top sash to create decorative patterns, such as the windows of the upstairs living room.
The decorative wooden brackets in the eaves of the exterior as well as the projecting bay windows on the south facade are characteristic of Victorian vernacular and the bay allows more
light to enter into the space and create a greater range of views. The Prince-of-Persia marble stairs and walkway leading to the front door are indicators of taste and a lavish lifestyle. The
iron fence is typical in the South-of-Broad neighborhood, providing visual access but still a sense of security. The inclusion of the piazza on the west is a staple of Charleston architecture,
serving as an exterior room that provides a comfortable environment to see and be seen. The pediment on the south end of the piazza is intended to reflect the piazza screen of a typical
Charleston single house, and along with the pediment over the front door supported by ionic columns, was a part of the 1905 Colonial Revival alterations.
